Segwave AuthorTM is authoring software for creating and publishing web presentations to the Internet or an Intranet. With Segwave Author you can build creative web presentations without having to learn Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Segwave Author provides a sub-set of HTML tags that are easy to use, yet does not limit the savvy HTML user. The software is currently being used by MCO faculty and assistants to develop new course materials or convert existing materials into a web format for our Academic Intranet. Segwave Author is a Java-based software application. It supports both the Windows and Macintosh platform. The software was developed by the Center for Creative Instruction (CCI) at the Medical College of Ohio (MCO).

Segwave Author Features

Creating HTML components

The Segwave Author Toolbar contains several basic HTML components that may be used to construct a web presentation. The components or page elements allow you to easily add, delete, or modify the content in your presentation. A few of the basic page elements offered include headings, lists, text, URLs, line breaks, horizontal rules, and tables. Segwave Author also allows for the importing of multiple media formats. A few of the basic import page elements offered include HTML, text, movies, images, image thumbnails, PowerPoint slides, audio, and PDF.

Recording & Synchronizing Audio

Segwave Author provides the ability to record audio with your web presentations. Each page of your presentation can include an audio recording. Segwave Viewer handles the audio playback through a web browser. The audio must first be recorded with Segwave Author. This can be done by connecting a microphone to your desktop computer. Once the audio has been captured into a native audio format, Segwave Author will convert the file into a compressed format that can be streamed across the Internet or an Intranet and played back by the RealPlayerTM application. When the entire presentation is published to the web server, the audio files are also published to a RealMediaTM Server. Segwave Viewer can play the presentation with the embedded audio, or you can choose to toggle the audio off or on while viewing the presentation.

Publishing & Viewing Presentations

A consistent file structure is created when Segwave Author saves a presentation. This makes the navigation and viewing easier for the end user. Segwave Author handles transferring the presentation to the web server and updating the Segwave Base, an integrated Oracle database. In addition, you do not need to develop the navigation since the forward and backward buttons and outline indexes are automatically handled by Segwave Viewer.

Hardware Platforms Supported

Segwave Author is a Java-based software application. Both Windows and Macintosh products are available.
